Overview

Located between the Rangit and Rathong rivers, this sacred monastery is considered to be the heart center of Sikkim. The monastery's name means 'The Devoted Central Glory' and it contains some of the most sacred religious objects in Sikkim.

History

Tashiding Monastery was founded in 1641 by Ngadak Sempa Chempo, one of the three monks who brought Buddhism to Sikkim. It is considered one of the holiest Buddhist monasteries in Sikkim and is famous for the annual Bhumchu festival where holy water from a sacred vessel is distributed to devotees.
