Overview

Located on a hilltop above Gangtok, Enchey Monastery offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and houses a collection of masks used in the Cham dance. The name 'Enchey' means 'solitary temple' and it's believed to be built on the site blessed by Lama Druptob Karpo.

History

Enchey Monastery was established in 1840 around the time when Gangtok was established as a settlement. The monastery belongs to the Nyingma order of Vajrayana Buddhism. According to legend, Lama Druptob Karpo, who was renowned for his flying powers, flew from Maenam Hill to this site and built a small hermitage.
